Excavation contractors are the first on the scene, responsible for site clearing, grading, and digging foundations. Because their work occurs underground and involves heavy machinery, Excavation insurance is designed to address the high-frequency risks of utility strikes and the high-severity risks of soil instability, subject to the terms, conditions, exclusions, and limitations of the policy issued.

1. General Liability & Underground Utility Strikes

The most common risk in excavation is hitting "buried treasure"—gas lines, fiber optic cables, or water mains. Even with a "Call Before You Dig" (811) ticket, contractors are often held liable for the massive repair costs and business interruption losses if they sever a utility line.

2. Subsidence & Earth Movement

Excavation can change the pressure on neighboring soil. Coverage is structured to address claims if a contractor’s digging causes a "cave-in" or causes a neighboring building’s foundation to settle, crack, or collapse due to the loss of lateral support.

3. XCU (Explosion, Collapse, and Underground) Coverage

Standard policies sometimes exclude "XCU" risks. For excavation contractors, ensuring these are explicitly covered is vital. This addresses damage caused by blasting (Explosion), the structural failure of trenches (Collapse), and damage to any underground property (Underground).

4. Pollution Liability & Discovered Hazards

Excavators often "find" things they didn't expect, such as old underground storage tanks (USTs) or contaminated soil. This coverage addresses the legal and cleanup costs if the contractor accidentally ruptures a tank or spreads contaminated soil across a clean site.
